Background of the study
Climate change poses significant environmental and socio-economic challenges, necessitating effective adaptation strategies. In Eket, residents' perceptions of climate change critically influence their adaptive responses and resilience measures (Etuk, 2023). Local communities are increasingly experiencing climate-related phenomena such as erratic rainfall, rising temperatures, and coastal erosion. Such changes have prompted a mix of traditional and innovative adaptation strategies. Research indicates that public perception often dictates the acceptance and success of adaptation measures, with misinformation and limited awareness hampering effective responses (Edet, 2024). This study examines how residents of Eket perceive climate change and the subsequent adaptation strategies they employ. It explores the relationship between perception, adaptive behavior, and community resilience, thereby providing a framework for improving local adaptation initiatives (Etuk, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Residents of Eket Local Government Area face a critical challenge in understanding and adapting to the impacts of climate change. Despite experiencing significant environmental changes, there remains a gap in public perception and effective adaptation strategies. Misconceptions, lack of information, and limited engagement in climate resilience practices contribute to inadequate responses to climate threats. This study seeks to explore the extent of these challenges, assess residents’ perception of climate change, and identify factors that influence adaptive behavior. Addressing these gaps is essential for developing targeted interventions that enhance community resilience (Edet, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess residents' perception of climate change in Eket.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of current adaptation strategies.

  3. To identify factors influencing adaptive behavior in the community.

Research questions:

  1. What is the perception of climate change among Eket residents?

  2. How effective are existing adaptation strategies in Eket?

  3. What factors influence residents’ adaptive behavior?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Positive perception of climate change correlates with proactive adaptation measures.

  2. Gaps in climate change knowledge impede effective adaptation.

  3. Socio-economic factors significantly influence adaptive behavior among residents.

Significance of the study
This study offers critical insights into the dynamics between climate change perception and adaptation strategies. The findings will inform policymakers and community leaders on enhancing climate resilience through tailored interventions, ensuring improved community adaptation and sustainable development (Etuk, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to assessing residents' perception of climate change and adaptation strategies within Eket Local Government Area.

Definitions of terms:

  • Climate Change: Long-term alterations in weather patterns due to natural or human-induced factors.

  • Adaptation Strategies: Measures taken to adjust to actual or expected climate changes.

  • Perception: The process by which individuals interpret and understand environmental changes.
